The date is Tuesday, May 9, 1820. Mr. Madison has spent most of his time at home since his retirement from the Presidency on March 4, 1817. He has occupied his time with his pursuit of agricultural improvements to the farm, his copious correspondence, reviewing his Notes on the Grand Convention of 1787, his participation in the establishment of the new University of Virginia, and reflections on over forty years of political life as Virginia legislator, member of the Confederation Congress, member of the Constitutional Convention, Congressman from Virginia from 1789 to 1797, Secretary of State, and 4th President of the United States. Come visit his home at Montpelier and spend some time visiting with the former President in the context of his own time, 200 years ago to the day. He will be as interested in your views on a variety of different subjects as you may be of his. It is always a stimulating conversation.
